Advances in the field of software and hardware development warranty the "luxury" to operate with the third dimension. Based on some recent software achievements, the paper presents a client-server approach for a 3D GIS. The approach permits query and analysis of spatial and semantic information by remote users across the Web. The data are hosted in a DBMS according to a specially designed conceptual schema, which allows storage of geometry, attributes, spatial relationships and behaviour of object. The approach is based on established Web mechanisms to control the access to the database and create documents on the fly. The new aspect is the elaborated employment of VRML for visualisation, query and exploration of 3D data. A GUI on the client site provides the users with means (fill-out forms) to specify SQL queries and visualise 3D outcomes in virtual reality environment. A prototype system and a number of examples validate the proposed concepts.

مدل‌سازی روابط توپولوژیک سه بعدی فازی در محیط GIS

Nowadays, geospatial information systems (GIS) are widely used to solve different spatial problems based on various types of fundamental data: spatial, temporal, attribute and topological relations. Topological relations are the most important part of GIS which distinguish it from the other kinds of information technologies. One of the important mechanisms for representing topological relations...

Construction schedule review in GIS with a navigable 3D animation of project activities

This paper presents a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based navigable 3D animation of project activities to visualise and review a construction project schedule as an alternative to the existing 4D CAD tools. Most of the commercial tools allow planners to build a 4D model but lack features like generation and manipulation of developed 4D model on a single platform. To facilitate the 4D mod...

3 D GIS , where are we standing ?

1. Introduction Since early '90 GIS has become a sophisticated system for maintaining and analysing spatial and thematic information on spatial objects. The need for 3D information is rapidly increasing. 2D GIS analysis has shown its limitations in some situations, e.g. noise prediction models (noise spreads out in three dimensions) (Kluijver and Stoter, 2003), water flood models, air pollution...

A Preliminary Review on 3-dimensional City Model

Modern city system has increasingly become more complex in spatial context, with impressive 3-dimensional features shown on its skyline, such as high-rise buildings, road flyovers, tunnels and underground infrastructure. Focusing on such complex system, Urban GIS, traditionally only concerns about 2-dimensional spatial relationships, has now pushed to analyse, model and manage the 3-dimensional...

Integrating Gis, Cg and the Www for Facilitating Public Involvement in Urban Landscape Evaluation

In spite of the widespread use of the Internet, its potential for facilitating public involvement in urban planning projects has not yet been exploited. In this paper, the possibilities and limitations of integrating GIS, CG and the WWW for facilitating the public involvement in urban landscape evaluation are discussed. It is proposed that off-the-shelf 2D GIS and 3D CAD software can be efficie...
